HILA — Healthy & Inclusive Living Alliance

About HILA

We can design the places where we live, work, learn and gather better.

The Healthy & Inclusive Living Alliance brings health, inclusion and sustainability together through education, advocacy, research, building, development, community and direct help.

A multigenerational community beside a sustainable home

What HILA is

A connected movement for people, places and planet.

HILA is a national public-benefit initiative centred on the places that shape everyday life: homes, workplaces, schools, public buildings, community spaces, commercial environments, developments and neighbourhoods.

We connect people, knowledge and practical action so healthier, more inclusive and sustainable living becomes easier to understand, create and experience.

HILA's formal legal structure is still being established. It is not currently a registered charity.

Our purpose

Health, inclusion and sustainability belong in the same conversation.

Mission

To create a healthier, more inclusive and sustainable way of living through education, advocacy, research, building, development, community and direct help.

Vision

A future where every person can live, work, learn and gather in places that support health, dignity, participation and environmental responsibility.

Our connected approach

Better outcomes begin by seeing the whole picture.

Health, inclusion and sustainability are often addressed separately. HILA treats them as connected: the materials in a building affect indoor environments; access and sensory design affect participation; energy, water and landscape choices affect both people and planet.

This approach brings together evidence, design expertise, lived experience and community knowledge. It helps turn broad principles into practical decisions at every scale.

Relief & Pathways

From movement to measurable legacy

HILA begins with education, advocacy, collaboration and practical community action. Its longer-term vision is to turn those principles into direct, measurable help — from pilot housing and support programs through to purpose-designed places that help people rebuild their lives.

How the organisations connect

A connected ecosystem

HILA brings public-benefit work, specialist expertise and real-world delivery together without blurring the role of each organisation.

HILA

Healthy & Inclusive Living Alliance

Public education, advocacy, research, community, campaigns and measurable impact.

HILA leads the public-benefit mission and brings health, inclusion and sustainability together.

The Healthy Building Designer

Specialist education & design expertise

The Healthy Building Designer contributes specialist knowledge in healthy buildings, Building Biology, neuroinclusive design, inclusive design, biophilic design and sustainable design.

Selected education, resources and professional learning can be created in collaboration with HILA, with the provider clearly identified.

Taluma Green Property Group

Built project & development delivery

Taluma Green Property Group is a separate commercial property and development business that can work with HILA on selected built projects where its expertise and delivery model are appropriate.

Commercial project delivery remains separate from HILA’s public-benefit governance.

HILA, The Healthy Building Designer and Taluma Green Property Group remain separate brands and functions. Where they work together, the role of each organisation and any commercial arrangement is made clear.

Founder story

Why HILA exists

HILA grew from a simple question: if the places around us affect how we feel, function and participate, why are health, inclusion and sustainability still so often treated separately?

Founder Maria Faalafi is a Building & Interior Designer with more than 20 years of experience across design and construction-related work, including earlier engineering drafting. Her work spans healthy building design, Building Biology, neuroinclusive design, inclusive design, biophilic design, sustainable design, building design and interior design.

Maria's experience helped shape HILA's foundation. The organisation reaches beyond one discipline or one person, bringing individuals, professionals, organisations, researchers and communities into a shared national conversation.

The future we are working towards

From better individual places to healthier, more inclusive and sustainable neighbourhoods.

HILA's long-term direction connects practical education and advocacy with research, building transformations, new developments, community precincts and neighbourhood-scale change. Progress is shared through genuine projects, measured outcomes and transparent learning.
